1. Is the thermostat set to heat and set to desired temperature? I know it seems like a no-brainer but just make sure the set point is higher than the temperature in the room. It seems simple but you never know who did what.

2. Has the furnace been mistakenly turned off? Most furnaces are installed with a on/off switch in the vicinity of the appliance itself. Laundry baskets and little fingers sometimes like to flip that switch to off mistakenly.

3. Are there any blinking lights? Do your best at counting flashes or notating patterns. Many furnaces have a list of what the flashes or patterns mean but in most cases the descriptions lead to more questions. Use it as a tool to describe your problem to a technician to save time and money.

4. Has the breaker or fuse been tripped or blown? Double check your electrical panel. Fuses typically have a blackened burnt look when they have popped. If you have a breaker that has tripped it can be easily missed. Rather than simply looking try and switch it to off and then back on. Breakers can half trip giving the appearance that everything is normal.

5. Has the filter been replaced recently? Depends on the type of filter but if light has a hard time getting through then so does air. So if your filter is gross remove it than turn the furnace off and right back on either at the switch or breaker.

These things can either help you avoid a service call or better prepare your technician at time of service.
